June 1, 2023 – November 30, 2024
Silencing in the Arts is a research project that interrogates the culture of silence that permeates the art world, looking specifically at the uses and impacts of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) within the Canadian visual art and culture sector. The project documents the experiences of arts workers, artists, and curators who have signed an NDA with a Canadian arts organization in two ways: through detailed interviews with select candidates, and through an anonymous online form with the broader community. Working with a legal researcher, a licensed lawyer, and a registered psychotherapist, Aisle 4 will create and distrubute a publicly-accessible resource guide to empower arts workers and advocate for change within the sector.
